Steve Roselles Selected
Steve Roselles
has been selected to participate in the 17th Annual National Juried
Exhibition of the Oil Painters of America. Over 1200 artists submitted
more than 2000 works for jurying. Steve was one of only 200 whose
paintings were selected for the exhibition, and he has been awarded
additional honors in the form of two special jurors awards sponsored by Sourcetek
and the Arlington Heights Art Guild.
The National Exhibition, at the Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana,
runs from May 2nd through June 14th. As a result of his selection,
Steve is eligible for signature membership in the prestigious Oil Painters
of America.
Regarding his work, Steve has said, "My style can loosely be described
as impressionistic - I like the time honored description of impressionism
- the placement of single strokes of paint that are the right color, the right
shape, and placed in the right spot - this is what I strive for when
painting."
Steve works both en plein air and in the studio. Self-taught,
he has developed a unique style using a palette knife for the majority of
his pieces. He enjoys painting landscapes, parks, gardens,
and architectural subjects. Steve's paintings may be seen at
Blue Dog Gallery in Lead, SD, at Prairie Edge Gallery in
Rapid City, and at Wyoming Art and Frame in Gillette. In addition,
his latest work will be on display during the Artists of the Black Hills Annual
Exhibition, opening June 28th at the Opera House in Lead, SD.
Steve Roselles is a South Dakota native who grew up in the gold mining town of Lead.
He is a founding member of the Artists of the Black Hills.

Owners of
Prairie Edge Trading Co. & Galleries in Rapid City on Tuesday morning
unveiled a new statue, replacing one that had been controversial for its
symbolic depiction of Native Americans.
The new statue, "Hunkayapi," or "Tying on the Eagle Plume," was created
by Dale Lamphere of Sturgis.
"Over the past two years, I have had the pleasure of creating this sculpture
for Prairie Edge and the people of this area. My hope is that this sculpture portrays
the wisdom, dignity and pride that Native people carry forward through
their traditions and ceremonies," Lamphere said in a prepared statement.
He said the work depicts a Lakota naming ceremony, in which the ancestry
of each person is remembered, a new name is given, and future relations
are celebrated.
Van Nuys Takes Flight
A painting of the
Spring Creek Valley south of Rapid City, by ABH signature member James
Van Nuys, recently graced the cover of SkyWest Magazine. SkyWest,
the in-flight magazine of United Airlines affiliate, SkyWest Airlines, features
Rapid City and the Black Hills region as a destination in its March/April
edition.
SkyWest's coup, in garnering Van Nuy's work for its cover, was clearly a
bid to be seen as the arbiter of taste and style in the in-flight
publishing industry. The appearance of another of James' paintings
within the pages of the magazine leaves no doubt as to the success of their
efforts.
