Realist painter and sculptor James VanNuys was born in
Whittier, California in 1955 and has lived intermittently in Rapid City,
South Dakota for most of his life. He attended Wilmington College in Ohio,
graduating in 1978 with a double major in art and music. Returning to the
Black Hills in 1982, he began to apply his formidable skills to the landscape
that he loves: the Black Hills, the Badlands, and the small forgotten prairie
towns that dot the map of western South Dakota.

Van Nuys works in
oils, acrylics, watercolors, bronze and various drawing and printmaking materials.
He has, surprisingly, been able to maintain his exacting standards of quality
and craftsmanship throughout this broad range of media. His works in all
media have been juried into and won awards in many national competitions
including The Oil Painters of America show, and the open exhibitions of the
Salmagundi Club in New York City. Known regionally as one of the finest interpreters of South Dakota landscape, Van Nuys’s finely detailed paintings capture the most subtle nuances of prairie and forest light. |
