artists of the black hills

My work is most concerned with this small, wonderful part of the world, its landscape and inhabitants.  The flow of the hills and the prairie grasses, wind currents and changing light patterns are often a taking off point for me.  Those abstract qualities shape the basis of the more realistic impressions in my work, whether in etchings, wood block prints, oils, pastels, egg tempera or jewelry.

It seems I scarcely begin a landscape when it is being altered for yet another project.  Our ever expanding population forces alterations on the environment and the lives of all inhabitants.  My hope is that growth will not destroy the qualities that so many have come to enjoy.

I love the flow of the hills and prairie; the geometric forms. Linear qualities, the visual and sensory movement of light and air are always inspiring.  Incorporating color, both natural, symbolic, and emotional, that are important in other media, as an element in my printmaking is important.  Working with minority students brought other subjects to mind - of similarities, differences, feelings of rejection, inadequacies, and joys of learning, of helping and being helped.  Death and children’s growth - marriage - children - divorce - all give their own subject matter.

The year 1980-1990 were involved with my husband’s kidney failure,  dialysis, transplants, and ultimate death.  Then came the period of role reversal dealing with aging and dying parents.  Throughout this time period, another career -- first as a teacher’s aide and then as a full-time junior high secretary, relegated art to a part-time avocation.  Since retiring in June of l996  after 24 years from the Rapid City School System, my life is filled with art, pets, gardening, reading and cooking.
