artists of the black hills

I have been making photographs and lens-based images for the past 30 years. I work with both digital and silver in black and white and in color.

I am drawn to subjects, often in or connected to the landscape, which in some way seem out of place or not readily identifiable.

I like to use my camera to aid in my exploration of the world and to pare away or isolate all that I feel is unnecessary.

Steve Babbitt has been teaching photography at the college level for 15 years and is currently a professor of photography at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, South Dakota.

His photographs can be found in the collections of The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, The Getty Museum Library, The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the San Francisco Art Institute. Steve has earned both a BFA and MFA in photography from The San Francisco Art Institute. He currently lives in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Steve Babbitt is represented locally by the Spearfish Art Center Gallery, Spearfish, South Dakota.
