Watch artists painting live in action at various locations! View all of the work painted by the artists each day at our plein air headquarters in the Harley Davidson Building in the heart of downtown Hill City!
Wednesday, September 23:
Artists will meet at a TBD location, to paint an iconic Black Hills landscape throughout the day. See the artists set up and painting live!
Nocturne painting Keep your eyes open for Black Hills Plein Air artists painting at night! After dusk, the artists will be out painting the beautiful night scenes the Black Hills has to offer.
Thursday, September 24:
Artists will paint around the Hills and Custer State Park area. Group painting location to be announced!

Gallery Walk. Beginning at 5:00 p.m., downtown Hill City will host a gallery walk by Hill City’s galleries, showing original artwork by regional artists. Stay tuned for list of participating galleries!
Nocturne Painting. During the gallery walk and continuing into the night, artists will be challenged to paint night scenes of downtown Hill City.
Gallery Talk. At 7:00 p.m., Learn about about plein air and nocturne painting during this presentation at the Harley Davidson Building Plein Air Headquarters (261 Main St.) Hill City, SD 57745
Friday, September 25:
Artists will paint around the Hills and Custer State Park area.
View the paintings created from the first 2 days at the Harley Davidson Building Plein Air Headquarters (261 Main St.) from 8 am.-3p.m.
The venue will be closed to artists and the public for jurying from 3 to 6:30pm.
Private Sponsor Reception from 5:30 pm-6:30 pm, invitation only.
Artists’ Reception (free and open to the public) Between 6:30-8:30p.m., meet the artists at the Harley Davidson Building Plein Air Headquarters (261 Main St.) and see all of the artwork painted on-site in the Black Hills from the past 3 days! This is your chance to vote for your favorite scene of the Black Hills! Votes will be collected and tallied at 7:15 pm during the reception to decide the People’s Choice award.
Awards At 7:30 p.m. artist awards will be announced, including Best of Show, People’s Choice, Honorable Mention and Best Nocturne.
Saturday, September 26:
View all of the paintings created during the entire event at the Harley Davidson Building Plein Air Headquarters (261 Main St.) 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Today is your last chance to take home your favorite!
Quick Draw and Auction. Between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. in downtown Hill City, artists have only two hours to capture a scene and create a finished painting. One artist will be awarded the prize for the the Best Quick Draw. The artworks created during this event will be auctioned off immediately afterward on Main Street downtown, with 30% of proceeds going to a local charity.

The Black Hills Plein Air Paint-Out is organized by the Artists of the Black Hills and the Hill City Arts Council.
Artists of the Black Hills is an area organization of professional artists, artisans, and galleries with a common goal of establishing
the Black Hills region as a prime source for art of the highest quality. ABH works with regional arts organizations and
commercial entities to foster greater growth and appreciation of the Black Hills as an art center.
Hill City Arts Council envisions the community of Hill City as a community embracing the arts. Its mission is to nurture and
support the arts and humanities as well as helping to boost the creative economy by offering arts and music events to show
their motto is “Small Town, Big Art.”
