Spearfish Canyon Plein Aire Watercolor

Painted on site in Spearfish Canyon, this watercolor captures my favorite spot located at Savoy.  This backdrop for Spearfish Canyon Lodge and Latchstring Inn was a part of my childhood while living in the Black Hills of South Dakota, and it continues to be a destination I seek out today. This painting can be viewed at Bonnie Halsey-Dutton’s downtown Spearfish studio at Artifacts Antiques and Art, 740 N. Main Street, Spearfish, SD, 57783.

Trade Beads II

Through painting, I have explored the topic of intercultural interaction and global trade for many years. This painting originates from examining trade beads as an intercultural form of currency, a them that impacted me when first viewing glass trade beads that were on display at an outdoor market held at the annual Riverton Wyoming Rendezvous.

Textures of the Trade

Although I am not Native American, I am a product of a Midwestern culture that was created through complex interaction between peoples of various origin. Much of this early cultural interaction was originated through trade of goods, ideas, and perspectives. This has become a common theme that I examine through painting.

Autumn Road

It is always inviting to drive down a country road, but is especially lovely those few weeks in Autumn when the colors are bright.  I was drawn to this scene because of the gold/yellow aspens and the pinkish shadows.
